Immersion
Immersion in another’s culture can have a profound effect on you.
I became obsessed with the Aboriginal Art of Australia after an Art Trip arranged by my brother.
Everyday was infused with Gallery visits, Studio viewings and a quick trip to Canberra where the Grand Master’s Exhibition was showing.
As I stood for hours amongst these glorious works emotions took over and the crowds were forgotten.
Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” encouraged tears to fall while the Aboriginal Art ignited again the passion and excitement I found in Bridget Riley’s Optical Illusions.
The blending of organic forms, rich palettes and 3D illusions has inspired in me another series of work.
Paintings that remind me of grasses moving in the wind, glancing deep into the foliage of a tree or seabed’s dancing with ocean currents.
I have also been working on a series of works that remind me of a Museum specimen drawer where insects are laid out in a deliberate order or scattered in a more random style as if they were recently discovered yet millions of years old. These are like a Neolithic snap-shot from a time long gone
